AFCON: Super Eagles Overpower Mozambique 4–0, Advance to Quarterfinals

 

     Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Monday night sealed qualification for the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a commanding 4–0 triumph over Mozambique’s Mambas.

The emphatic display underlined Nigeria’s

 attacking strength and defensive discipline, as

 the West African giants cruised past their

 opponents to set up a quarterfinal clash against

 the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between Algeria and DR Congo.

Nigeria asserted control early in the match,

 pressing aggressively and dictating the tempo.

 Their dominance paid off in the 20th minute

 when Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock,

 calmly finishing from close range after a precise

 assist from Akor Adams. The pressure intensified

 moments later, with Victor Osimhen doubling the

 lead in the 25th minute, capitalizing on another

 Akor Adams delivery to place the ball neatly into

 the bottom corner.

Mozambique found it difficult to cope with

 Nigeria’s pace and movement, spending much of

 the first half on the defensive. Despite a few fouls

 and a booking for Wilfred Ndidi, the Super Eagles

 comfortably headed into halftime with a 2–0

 advantage.

The second half resumed with Nigeria

 maintaining their attacking momentum. Osimhen

 struck again just two minutes after the restart,

 completing his brace with a close-range effort set up by Lookman. Mozambique attempted to

 change the flow of the game through multiple

 substitutions, but Nigeria’s backline remained

 compact and well-organized.

Nigeria’s dominance was further rewarded in the

 75th minute when Akor Adams capped an

 outstanding performance by firing a powerful

 right-footed shot into the top corner to extend the lead to 4–0.

Head coach José Peseiro later introduced fresh

 legs, with Moses Simon, Raphael Onyedika,

 Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Samuel Chukwueze, and

 Paul Onuachu entering the fray as Nigeria

 managed the closing stages with ease.

 Mozambique’s frustrations showed late on, as

 Faizal Bangal received a yellow card and Chamito

 committed a late foul, but the Mambas were

 ultimately outmatched.

The convincing victory reinforces Nigeria’s status
