The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that Nigeria recorded a total of 1,119 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 206 fatalities as of December 21, 2025.
The data was outlined in the agency’s
epidemiological situation report for week 51 of
2025, covering December 15 to 21, which was
released in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the
report, the case fatality rate (CFR) rose to 18.4 per
cent, surpassing the 16.4 per cent recorded
during the corresponding period in 2024.
Despite the overall high number of cases, the
NCDC observed a modest drop in weekly
infections. The report showed that 21 new
confirmed cases were recorded in week 51,
compared to 28 cases reported in week 50.
The newly confirmed infections were
documented in Edo, Bauchi, Kogi, Ebonyi,
Plateau, Ondo and Taraba States, reflecting a
continued pattern of transmission concentrated
in a limited number of states.
The report further indicated that at least one
confirmed case was recorded in 21 states across
105 local government areas in 2025. However,
Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba and Edo States together
accounted for 88 per cent of all confirmed cases,
highlighting the ongoing concentration of the
disease in key hotspot areas. Encouragingly, the
agency confirmed that no new healthcare worker
infections were reported during week 51.
Additionally, the NCDC noted that both suspected
and confirmed Lassa fever cases recorded in
2025 were lower than those reported during the
same timeframe in 2024, suggesting a gradual
reduction in overall transmission.
The agency called for sustained alertness,
emphasizing the need for early case detection,
improved environmental hygiene and effective
rodent control, particularly in high-risk
communities, as the dry season often linked to
increased Lassa fever transmission continues.
