FG Explores Defence Technology Partnership With Turkey’s ASELSAN

 

The Federal Government has taken steps to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities through a potential strategic collaboration with ASELSAN, Turkey’s leading defence technology company.

This followed an official visit by a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Defence, Gen.

 Christopher Musa (Rtd.), to ASELSAN’s facilities during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state

 visit to Turkey. The delegation also included the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin

 Aneke, among other senior defence officials

The visit provided an opportunity for Nigerian officials to inspect advanced defence equipment and

 engage Turkish defence authorities on areas of cooperation. Discussions centred on modernising

 Nigeria’s armed forces, strengthening technical capacity, and exploring technology transfer

 arrangements that could support local defence production and innovation.

The delegation was hosted by Haluk Görgün, President of Turkey’s Defence Industries, who outlined

 ASELSAN’s capabilities in defence electronics, surveillance systems, communication technologies,

 and advanced military hardware.

Strengthening Bilateral Defence Cooperation

According to officials, the engagement reflects Nigeria’s broader strategy of leveraging international

 partnerships to improve operational effectiveness, enhance innovation, and address evolving security

 challenges. Both sides discussed pathways for sustained collaboration, including training, technical

 support, and long-term industrial partnerships.

The initiative also underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s

 defence sector through credible partnerships with globally recognised defence technology firms.

Improved defence capacity has direct implications for national security, particularly in addressing

 terrorism, banditry, and other security threats. Strategic partnerships such as this could also create
