A hidden fortune inside a sofa cushion, a political firestorm, and a dramatic court intervention, South Africa's latest political saga has taken another major turn.
The story begins at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s private game farm in Limpopo. In 2020, intruders stole approximately $580,000 in cash hidden inside a sofa cushion.
Ramaphosa explained that the cash came from a legal sale of buffaloes, but critics questioned why such a large amount of foreign currency was kept inside furniture rather than deposited in a bank.
As public pressure grew, political opponents in parliament pushed for an official impeachment process. A panel report was created to determine whether the president should face a formal trial that could remove him from office.
Before parliament could proceed, President Ramaphosa challenged the legal validity of the panel's report in court.
On Friday, July 24, the Western Cape High Court ruled in his favor, placing a temporary hold on the impeachment hearings while judges review the legal grounds of the case.
This court ruling grants President Ramaphosa temporary breathing room to challenge the proceedings legally. However, it also highlights the ongoing debate over how democratic systems balance legal due process with political accountability.
