Why Governor Yusuf’s Visit to Tinubu Is Stirring Political Debate in Kano

 

Speculation over the political future of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, intensified on Monday following a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, which took place in the afternoon, has sparked widespread rumours that the governor, who

 was elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), may be considering a possible

 defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, no official confirmation has emerged

 from either party.

Governor Yusuf, known for his distinctive white traditional attire and red Kwankwasiyya cap, declined

 to speak with journalists after the meeting. His silence has further fueled public debate amid reports of

 ongoing political consultations involving key stakeholders.

While the governor was in Abuja, Kano State affairs continued uninterrupted, with the State Executive

 Council meeting earlier held at the governor’s lodge in the capital. President Tinubu had returned to

 the country from an overseas trip a day before the meeting.

Amid the speculation, the APC chairman in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, suggested that the

 governor could formally register as a party member within days, as the party continues its electronic

 membership registration exercise across the state. He said preparations were made to accommodate

 new entrants as part of the ongoing political realignment.

However, the NNPP national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, dismissed claims that he had endorsed

 any planned defection, insisting that no approval had been granted for such a move.

Despite heightened political tension in recent days, Kano remained calm, with normal commercial and

 social activities continuing across the state. Security around the Government House, which had earlier

 been reinforced amid defection rumours, has since been scaled down, signaling a return to normalcy.

Political observers note that while consultations and meetings remain a routine part of governance, the

 coming days may provide clearer direction on Governor Yusuf’s political alignment ahead of the 2027

 election cycle.
