A 46-year-old Nigerian national, Osemwengie Irorere, has been fatally shot inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at
about 7 p.m. at the terminal located around
Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, according to
information obtained on Thursday.
Confirming the shooting on Wednesday, the
Toronto Police Service announced that a 40-year
old man, Tyrel Gibson, has been arrested and
charged with first-degree murder in connection
with the killing.
In a statement, police said officers responded to
reports of gunfire at the terminal on Sunday,
January 4, 2026. Investigators alleged that both
the victim and the suspect boarded the same GO
bus, where the suspect opened fire before fleeing
the scene on foot.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering
from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders
attempted life-saving measures, but Irorere was
pronounced dead at the scene. Police later
tracked down and arrested the suspect shortly
after the incident, recovering a firearm during
the operation.
Authorities identified the deceased as
Osemwengie Irorere, a Nigerian citizen, while the
suspect was confirmed to be a Toronto resident.
Police added that Gibson was scheduled to appear
at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, located at
2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, January 5,
2026, at 9:30 a.m., to face the charge.
The killing comes barely two weeks after another
Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in
the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve.
Onetufo was reportedly discovered with stab
wounds to his chest after police received a
distress call. Despite efforts by paramedics to
save him, he was declared dead at the scene.
The UK Metropolitan Police later confirmed that
one of the suspects arrested in connection with
the London incident has since been charged in
court.
