The Rivers State House of Assembly has again initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The lawmakers commenced the process during plenary on Thursday, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct. This development marks the second impeachment attempt by the Assembly within the past 10 months.
During a similar episode in 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly in March, following a prolonged political crisis.
Many political observers believe the president’s intervention effectively halted the earlier impeachment effort, which arose from Fubara’s fallout with his former political ally and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. While Fubara has since joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wike remains in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but is leading a broad-based coalition in Rivers State in support of Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
