Nigerian journalist and broadcaster Oseni Rufai has condemned an alleged assault involving an Indian national and two Nigerian truck drivers along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, describing the incident as a national shame.
Rufai shared his concerns in a statement circulating on social media, questioning the treatment of Nigerians by some foreign nationals and calling on the Nigerian government to ensure accountability in cases of alleged abuse.
The statement identified the truck drivers as Riliwan Olajide and Taiwo Yinusa and alleged that they were beaten by an Indian national with the assistance of other individuals.
Rufai argued that the incident raised concerns about the protection of Nigerian citizens within their own country, particularly in disputes involving foreign business owners and Nigerian workers.
He also cited alleged cases of workplace abuse involving foreign-owned businesses, including claims of physical assault and the confiscation of workers' passports.
According to him, the government must ensure that foreign nationals and Nigerian citizens are treated in accordance with Nigerian law, regardless of their nationality or economic influence.
Rufai Calls for Government Action
Rufai warned that failure to investigate allegations of assault and prosecute anyone found responsible could undermine public confidence in the country's justice system.
He specifically called for action over the case involving Karma Agric Feed & Foods, urging the authorities to ensure accountability.
The broadcaster also questioned whether Nigerians receive adequate protection when disputes arise between local workers and foreign nationals.
He maintained that Nigerian authorities must protect citizens within the country's borders and ensure that anyone found to have violated the law faces the appropriate legal consequences.
Calls for Equal Application of the Law
Rufai argued that Nigeria's sovereignty must include the effective enforcement of its laws against anyone who commits an offence within its territory.
He further stressed that the protection of Nigerian citizens at home should remain a priority for the government, particularly amid concerns about the treatment of Nigerians in some foreign countries.
However, the allegations surrounding the reported incident require independent verification, including confirmation of the circumstances of the alleged assault and whether the relevant authorities have initiated an investigation.
As of the information contained in the statement, no official response from the police or the company was provided.
