IGP Disu Assures Nigerians of Professional Policing Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the police will work towards ensuring professional conduct before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
Disu reportedly gave the assurance while speaking with journalists after the presentation of a book on the history of women in the Nigeria Police Force, written by retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Dame Stella Okuyiga. According to a report published by Naija News, the police chief said the force had begun reviewing lessons from previous elections as part of its preparations for the forthcoming polls.
He reportedly explained that a meeting involving commissioners of police and other senior officers had provided an opportunity to assess past performance and identify areas requiring improvement.
Public Confidence Will Be Important
The conduct of security agencies remains an important factor in Nigeria's electoral process. Police officers are expected to protect voters, maintain public order, respond to threats and ensure that political activities take place without intimidation or violence.
The neutrality of security personnel is particularly important during election periods, when disagreements between political parties and their supporters can increase tensions in some communities. For voters, assurances from police leadership will need to be reflected in the conduct of officers on election day and throughout the wider electoral process.
What Nigerians Should Expect
As preparations continue, important issues will include the deployment of personnel, protection of polling units, management of election-related disputes and response to reports of violence. The police will also face expectations to investigate credible complaints and ensure that political affiliation does not determine how individuals are treated.
Disu's reported assurance represents a commitment from police leadership, but the effectiveness of the preparations will ultimately depend on implementation. The police have yet to demonstrate through the 2027 general elections whether the planned measures will meet public expectations.
