The Federal Government has introduced a new USSD-based consumer credit service known as SPARK, aimed at helping Nigerians access affordable loans and build formal credit histories using basic mobile phones.

The initiative was showcased during the CREDICORP for All – Abia Edition, an outreach programme designed to promote access to consumer credit among market traders, transport operators, young people and other Nigerians.

According to information released by the organisers, the programme reached more than 1,000 residents of Abia State, highlighting how affordable consumer credit can create economic opportunities, improve livelihoods and support small businesses.

A major highlight of the event was the pilot introduction of SPARK, an innovative credit product designed particularly to help first-time borrowers access loans and establish their credit records.

Unlike conventional digital lending platforms that often require smartphones and internet access, SPARK operates through the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) technology, making it accessible to Nigerians using basic mobile phones.

Interested Nigerians can access the service by dialling * 347 * 333# on their mobile phones, without requiring a smartphone or internet connection.

The initiative is expected to expand access to formal consumer credit, particularly among people who have traditionally faced difficulties accessing loans through conventional financial institutions.

Speaking on the importance of the programme, the organisers emphasised that consumer credit goes beyond providing access to money, describing it as a tool for creating opportunities, strengthening livelihoods and supporting local enterprises.

Through its CREDICORP for All initiative, the Federal Government is seeking to improve financial inclusion and encourage responsible borrowing among Nigerians.

The programme also aims to help more Nigerians develop formal credit histories, potentially improving their access to financial services in the future.

With the introduction of SPARK, the government is expanding efforts to make consumer credit more accessible, including to Nigerians who do not own smartphones or have regular internet access.
