The Federal Government has introduced a fully digital system for the evaluation and authentication of academic certificates, allowing applicants to complete the process online without visiting the Federal Ministry of Education physically. The Federal Ministry of Education announced the development in a press release dated September 8, 2026, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to modernise government services and make access to education-related services easier for Nigerians and applicants outside the country. The initiative was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, who said the reform supports the Federal Government's digital transformation agenda and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. How the new certificate verification system works Under the new arrangement, applicants can complete the academic credential evaluation and authentication process through the Ministry's dedicated online platform. The move is expected to reduce the need for paperwork and physical visits while making the process more accessible to people who live far from Abuja, Nigerians living abroad and institutions or organisations that need reliable academic credentials. The Ministry said the digital process is designed to address some of the challenges associated with traditional government procedures, including bureaucratic delays, unnecessary physical movement and limited access to services. Beyond convenience, the reform is also intended to improve the credibility of Nigeria's academic certification system. Employers, educational institutions and other relevant stakeholders increasingly need reliable ways to determine whether academic qualifications presented by applicants are genuine. A structured digital verification system could make it easier to authenticate credentials and reduce opportunities for fraudulent certificates to be presented as legitimate qualifications.
What does this mean for ordinary Nigerians?
For citizens, the most immediate benefit is convenience. Previously, applicants who needed services from the Ministry could face the cost and inconvenience of travelling to the appropriate government office. With the process moved online, applicants can initiate and complete the required procedures remotely. This could be particularly useful for: Nigerians living outside Abuja; Nigerians residing abroad; Graduates applying for jobs requiring certificate verification; Students seeking admission or further education; Professionals requiring authenticated academic credentials; Employers and institutions checking applicants' qualifications.
How effective can the reform be?
The effectiveness of the new system will largely depend on how reliable and accessible the digital platform is. If properly implemented, automation could reduce processing delays, improve transparency and make it easier to track applications. It could also reduce the dependence on intermediaries who sometimes charge applicants money to navigate government processes. Another important benefit is accountability. A properly structured digital system can create electronic records of applications and verification activities, potentially making the process easier to monitor than a heavily paper-based system. However, the government will need to ensure that the platform remains secure, available and easy to use. Protection of applicants' personal and academic information will also be important because certificate verification involves sensitive personal data.
How the information can help citizens
The announcement is particularly useful because Nigerians who need certificate evaluation or authentication now have a clear indication that physical visits to the Ministry are no longer required under the new automated process. Applicants should avoid relying on unofficial agents or unverified websites when submitting their information. The Ministry directed applicants to use its official credential evaluation and authentication platform: Federal Ministry of Education Credential Evaluation Platform
For enquiries, the Ministry provided ess1@education.gov.ng.
Citizens should also be cautious of individuals claiming they can "fast-track" verification for unofficial payments. Applicants should first use the government's designated platform and official contact channel.
Why this matters beyond certificate verification
The reform represents a wider shift in how Nigerians interact with government institutions. Moving an important public service online can save citizens time and transportation costs while allowing government agencies to serve people regardless of their location. For Nigeria's education sector, a more reliable credential verification system could also strengthen confidence in academic qualifications and make it easier for employers and institutions to distinguish genuine credentials from fraudulent ones. If the system performs as intended, the reform could therefore benefit not only applicants but also employers, universities, government agencies and the wider Nigerian education system.
